QU-22 Diagrams and Key

 

 

The YQU-22A was the first QU-22 Series, of which only six were built. It has the shorter fuselage length of the Model 35 Bonanza. The raised area of the lower right cowling allows space for the engine driven auxiliary electrical power source, required by the electronic monitoring package.

The QU-22B was the second production series of the QU-22. It has the Model A36 Bonanza's longer fuselage. The prop reduction gear box and drive for the larger alternator required the distinctive raised cowling and larger prop spinner.

The Runway Remote Control Mobile Unit allowed the QU-22 to be operated as a drone by a ground-based technician. This procedure was not used in combat operations.

An improved version of the D33, evaluated at Eglin AFB, the PD249 was an ordnance delivery aircraft powered by a Continental GIO 520 engine which developed 350 HP.

The model D33 became the PD249. It is shown here in USAF camoflage with external stores (e.g., high drag bomb, minigun pod, * FFAR pod, etc.) during the PAVE COIN evaluation program at Eglin AFB. The USAF designation for the aircraft was YAU-22A:

  • Y = prototype;
  • A = attack;
  • U = utility.

The model D33 was an S35 Bonanza modified for evaluation as a light attack aircraft for the USAF. Tests were held at Eglin AFB in the Summer of 1965. The aircraft had three hardpoints for external stores (bombs, rockets, miniguns, etc.) under each wing. Evaluations were also conducted with the D33 for other roles such as Forward Air Control, Psy Ops, and parachute drops for which a large rear door was installed on the right side. The trademark V-tail of the Bonanza was changed to the conventional straight tail of the Beech Debonair.
